Brynn Kairis, Jacqueline Manni, and Allison Scherer are students at Rutgers University-Camden who undertook this research project as a part of their Literacy & Community course. They were inspired by the concept of literacy as a gatekeeper in the academic community, and chose to explore this theme by studying the English Language Learner (ELL) student population just across the bridge at UArts in Philadelphia.
Brynn Kairis is an English major and future teacher, passionate about studying literature and finding new ways to transfer this excitement to young students. She belongs to Rutgers-Camden's Writing and Literature Club, and in her spare time works with Camden middle school students in an after school program that promotes literacy and STEM. She has loved reading since childhood and feeds this addiction whenever possible.
Jacqueline Manni holds a BA in English from Temple University and is currently the Assistant Registrar for Student Enrollment and Communication at The University of the Arts. She is interested in the liminal spaces between art and craft, the academic and the practical, the individual and community, and the old and the new. She is currently attending Rutgers-Camden exploring these ideas through the disciplines of education, literature, history, and psychology. She blogs at jackiemania.wordpress.com.
Allison Scherer is an English major by day and waitress by night, pursuing whatever strikes her fancy at the moment, be it teaching, writing, or illustration. No matter which she pursues her ultimate goal is to feel fulfilled that in some small way she can make a difference. In her spare time she enjoys reading, playing the guitar, and dangling things in front of her cat.
